Metallographic Preparation Guides

Based on years of practical experience, OCHI’s technical team has compiled detailed preparation guides covering cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching for common materials. Whether you’re working with steel, non-ferrous metals, ceramics, or composites, you’ll find suitable preparation solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1.General Questions

How to choose the right cutting wheel?

Based on material hardness and type:

Non-ferrous metals (HV<375) → LWA series resin wheels

Ferrous metals (HV375-600) → HWA series resin wheels

Ferrous metals (HV>600) → HSA series resin wheels

Hard brittle/precision materials → Diamond blades

Possible causes and solutions:

High resin shrinkage → Use CHM3 edge-retention resin

Insufficient pressure → Increase mounting pressure

Too rapid cooling → Extend cooling time or reduce water flow

Sample not clean → Ensure sample is dry and clean

Check the following:

Skipped a grit step (e.g., P400 to P1200 directly)

Polishing cloth dirty or worn

Polishing suspension grit appropriat

Sample cleaned properly (residue from previous step)

Possible causes:

Sample surface not flat or improperly placed

Indenter damaged or contaminated

Dwell time incorrect

Calibration needed

2. Equipment Category FAQs

Ensure adequate coolant circulation, check coolant ratio (1:20 recommended), reduce cutting speed or use pulse mode.

Possible causes: Cutting speed too fast, insufficient cooling, wrong wheel type, excessive feed pressure.
Possible causes: High shrinkage, insufficient pressure, too rapid cooling, oily sample. Use edge-retention resin (CHM3), increase pressure, control cooling rate.
Check vacuum reaches -0.1Mpa, extend vacuum time, use low-viscosity resin (e.g., OCM4), ensure immediate vacuum after mixing.
General reference: Rough grinding (P240, 20-30N, 300rpm, 2-3min); Fine grinding (P600-P1200, 15-20N, 300rpm, 2min); Polishing (3μm diamond, 10-15N, 150rpm, 3min; final 0.05μm silica, 10N, 150rpm, 2min). Adjust based on material.
Due to hardness differences. Reduce pressure, shorten polishing time, or use finer suspension.
Start from surface edge, indent perpendicular to surface with 0.05-0.1mm steps until hardness drops to core+50HV. Use automatic tester (e.g., 402MVMS) for auto indentation and curve plotting.
General: HRC for hardened steel, carbides (20-70HRC); HRB for soft steel, copper (60-100HRB); HRA for carbides, thin cases (>70HRA); HR15N for thin surface layers.
